Making Tyvek leaves and flowers. April 2024 Susie led us to experiment with the use of Tyvek paper and fabric to create 3D structures. Most of us were new to this technique and needed a lot of help to get the construction right. Based on a wire framework, shaped pieces of painted Tyvek were stitched onto each of the spines of the wire construction with oversewing. We learned that it is less fiddly if you use a zig-zag on the machine!.... Once each petal has been stitched in place a textile heat gum is used to distress the Tyvek. The following photographs show us a t week this week. The session was enjoyed by all. A great way to celebrate the completion of all our work for the Grosvenor Shows this summer and autumn.
Experiments with Transfer Printing At the November meeting we experimented together with the effects we could achieve with Transfer prints from liquid medium applied to paper and ironed on poly/cotton or polyester fabric. The papers were prepared in advance so that we could concentrate on how to use the papers to link in with fabrics coloured in other ways. Here are a few images from the session. We plan to continue with this at the December meeting.
Indigo Dyeing Session This week the group have completed their discharge experiments and used the lovely weather to experiment with Indigo dyeing. Some interesting effects have been achieved. Thanks Chris for providing and mixing for us.
Exploration - taking dye out of fabric
Over recent weeks we have been looking at the effects we might achieve when we try to remove colour from natural fabrics, Each of us has stitched different varieties of cotton, linen or silk to a wadding background. These were then quilted as each of us thought best.
The quilted samples were then dyes with Procion MX dyes in black. The nature of black dyes are that they have either a blue or yellow bias. This leads to samples looking slightly different depending on the dye and the strength used. The fabric needs to be rinsed until the rinse water runs clear. Row 2 - Initial dyeing was too light. The piece was dyed again and then discharged ( had dye taken out in selected areas)
